Tobia Scarpa

"To design means to cast forward a thought, a will, a way of doing; it is to give while being in need of everything—it’s a journey through an intimate dimension."

Tobia Scarpa was born in Venice in 1935. In 1969, he graduated in Architecture and received the Compasso d'Oro ADI for the Soriana armchair. Over the following years, he received numerous recognitions, and some of his objects are now part of the permanent collections of the world’s most important museums.

In architecture, he has worked with public and private clients, including the Benetton Group, for which he designed the industrial complex in Castrette di Villorba, an example of aesthetic-functional excellence displayed at the 2012 Architecture Biennale.

"Materials must be treated with tenderness, allowing them to suggest the form the object should take."

Tobia Scarpa’s design is based on a perfect balance between form and function, refined over time. His vision is rooted in essentiality and structural coherence, constantly evolving in different but harmonious forms, giving life to durable and functional products that engage in refined dialogues with the environment and the objects within it.

His passion for chairs reflects his love for a classic and timeless aesthetic, blending creativity, craftsmanship, and industrial production, free from any academic stereotype, where technological innovations gradually emerge with surprising expressive variations.
